My mother was pretty fashionable during her younger days. She loved shopping at boutiques, trying out the latest hair styles and make up but she never impressed on me to follow what she did. She let me choose my own clothes and hair. So, I grew up basically having the freedom to style myself.
Through my 20s and 30s, I was aware of the emerging fashion trends during that time but I never had the urge to follow them. My style has evolved from the shoulder pad days of the 80s to the fuss-free straight line style of the 21st century but I was never crazy about acquiring branded clothing or accessories.
I think the main reason is that I realised fashion trends are created as a way to generate sales for the industry. Designers need to peddle their creations and one way is to generate hype through fashion shows or celebrity endorsements.
What I do not get is why torture yourself wearing 5-inch heels which you can barely walk in and make your feet hurt like hell? Why pay thousands of dollars for a bag that would be out of season in the next three months? Some people also do not realise that most of the designer clothing are made for models – tall and skinny. Now, not everyone has the figure to carry it off.
My philosophy is simple. Forget about trends. Choose and wear what makes you comfortable. You should be wearing the clothes and accessories, not the other way around.
So, next time you reach for a pair of shoes, bags or clothes from a designer’s latest collection, think thrice. Are they practical? Do you really need them? Is that really you?
P.S.: Any fashion designer reading this would probably want to kill me but everyone’s entitled to their opinion 😎
